The Santa Monica Rugby Club has won the USA Rugby Division I National Championship for the second year in a row. Led by game MVP Ross Armour, the Dolphins triumphed over the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, 57-19. According to Head Coach Stuart Krohn, “More impressive than the offense was the team defense. [Centers] Ross Armour and Nathan Jones shut down any attack the Irish offered. It was a huge team effort.” The team’s long-time General Manager Danny Benjamin stated that he has “never seen a finer back row fielded by Santa Monica from the scrumhalf to the fullback. We have had great players in the last 15 years at these positions, but never such depth and such ability at once. They played as a team.” Coach Krohn expects some team members will be chosen for the United States team for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. “Clearly our top players have proven themselves to be worthy of representing their country,” says Krohn. Hundreds of Santa Monica fans trekked down to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium to see the game, including several dozen former Santa Monica Rugby Club players.
