The name of Fire Captain Daniel M. Bendiksen was added to the permanent plaque commemorating “police officers and firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty to protect the citizens of Santa Monica” in ceremonies at the Public Safety Facility’s Memorial Plaza on Saturday, July 22, 2006. Firefighters, city officials and citizens joined Fire Chief Jim Hone and Rudi Bendiksen, the captain’s widow, in celebrating his 27 years of service, until he died of cancer contracted in the course of performing a firefighter’s hazardous duties.
