With the start of December comes the beginning of the high school basketball season.

This month most teams will be playing in tournaments before they’ll appear locally in league games in January.

The Santa Monica High boys’ team, which reached the CIF championship game last season, made its debut with a defeat in the Redondo Pacific Shores Tournament, but won a consolation bracket game from Serra High, 65-48 as Ari Feldman scored 19 points.

The 6-foot-6 Feldman, also a varsity volleyball player, was a key frontcourt reserve for the Vikings last year.

Santa Monica has moved on to the El Segundo Tournament, and will play a game at Mira Costa December 12, and its only home game of December against Peninsula on the 19th.

The Samohi girls’ team is being coached by Marty Verdugo this season. The team won the Ocean League title last season and figures strongly again although second place Inglewood is optimistic about its chances.

Four starters return at Samohi, including Ocean League MVP Emily Foshag and senior guard Allie Southham.

The Brentwood boys’ team also played in the Redondo Pacific Shores Tournament and had a 61-46 consolation bracket win over Narbonne. Brian Murphy is in his first season as the Eagles’ coach.

Brentwood will play in the El Segundo and Whittier Christian Tournaments and will be at home for the first time January 3 against Pacific Hills.

The Brentwood girls, coached by Dave Smith, are in the Marlborough Tournament, and later this month will compete in the Chandler, Arizona Tournament.

Pacifica Christian of Santa Monica is playing a varsity schedule for the first time. The boys finished sixth in the Milken Tournament, losing the fifth place game to Mary Star, 59-47. The team is coached by Kevin Kelsey.
