Saturday, November 24, 8:00 p.m., $15 presale, $20 door
Malibu Inn, 22969 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, 90265, 310.456.6060
The jazz-meets-punk project of Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction), Banyan features a revolving cast of musicians ready to improvise. Perkins and trumpeter Willie Waldman remain the group’s constants, but frequent performers include punk pioneer Mike Watt (the Minutemen), noise-master Nels Cline, and visual artist Norton Wisdom, amongst others. Wisdom is scheduled to appear with Banyan at this event, where he will spontaneously paint alongside Banyan’s music.
The Electones
Thursday, November 29, call for time, Free
Liquid Kitty, 11780 W. Pico Blvd., LA, 310.473.3707
Formed as the result of a standing gig at a jazz club in Long Beach, the Electones have established themselves across greater Los Angeles, playing frequent gigs everywhere from downtown to Pasadena to Silver Lake and beyond. When it comes to the Westside, this instrumental outfit tends to pop up onstage at Liquid Kitty, where the bar’s stiff martinis complement the band’s jazz-funk-soul hybrid.
