Olympic Trials For Swimmers:

Andi Murez of Team Santa Monica, a senior at Venice High, has earned a trip to the 2008 U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha.

She accomplished the feat in the Janet Evans Invitational meet at USC June 6-8 by achieving qualifying times in the 100-meter butterfly (1:02.38) and the 100-meter freestyle 56.97).

Murez became the first Team Santa Monica swimmer in a number of years to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

“She has undertaken a program similar to many of the elite athletes in our sport and it has paid off for her,” said Team Santa Monica coach Jon Carroll.

“I could not be more happy for Andi and her family as they have been willing to make every sacrifice necessary to realize this goal.”

The Olympic Trials begin June 29 and continue until July 6.

Murez’ time in the 100 freestyle has put her on a path to make the National Junior Team which will travel to Guam for a competition in January 2009.

Team Santa Monica is a nonprofit swimming club that trains daily at the Santa Monica Swim Center and Culver City Plunge.
