Lincoln Middle School students star on Australian TV!
This week, a story about school life in California, filmed with the students at Santa Monica’s Lincoln Middle School, will air on one of Australia’s most popular children’s television programs. The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) has a long running news show especially for children, called “Behind the News” (BtN). The program takes the big issues and breaks them down into a form that is easier for young viewers to understand. Last month BtN reporter Catherine Ellis visited Lincoln Middle School and filmed “a day in the life of a Californian school kid.”
“Children in Australia watch a lot of American television and movies, and I thought it would be interesting to do a fun feature on school life here, to see if it really is like what we see on the big screen.” Lincoln’s eighth grade TV students also got involved with the camera work for the story. The students had many questions about Australia and were amazed that the school year begins in February and the seasons are opposite. Australian football is also completely different, but aside from that and the frequent celebrity spotting in LA, the school, its students and classes are very similar to Australia. The story can be viewed on the “Behind the News” website, www.abc.net.au/btn.
