John Adams Middle School director of instrumental music Angela Woo was acknowledged by Norm Dea, President of the California Association of Music Education, at the 2012 California All-State Music Education Conference in Fresno for her recent nomination and induction into the prestigious John Philip Sousa Foundation “Legion of Honor.”
The award recognizes outstanding band directors from the United States and Canada with a long history of dedicated service to bands that have maintained school concert band programs of excellent musical quality for a period of at least twenty years, and who have held important positions of leadership in their professional organizations.
Legion of Honor Laureates for this year will be inducted in December 2012 at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago.
In addition to this induction, Woo was nominated and elected to be the Conductor of the 2014 CBDA California All-State Junior High Honor Band.
Conducting an honor band, especially the prestigious All-State Honor Band, is one of the highest honors a music educator can receive. For years, Woo has conducted All-State Honor Bands all around the country, and now she has been invited to conduct here in California.
“Angela is a highly respected music educator and conductor in California music education,” said Tom Whaley, SMMUSD’s Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator. “Her election [to the All-State Honor Band] shows the deep respect and admiration she has from her colleagues statewide. We are so very proud to have Angela Woo working with our students every day in the Santa Monica-Malibu USD!”
