74-Year-Old Man Arrested For Failing To Register As A Sex Offender With SMPD: Alert Police Blotter: I Need Help.

On Saturday, July 14, at 8:26 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the front desk of the police department in order to speak to a citizen who was reporting a man who needed help.

The officers spoke with the citizen who told them that he had been driving his car in the 1700 block of San Vicente Boulevard when he had seen a man who was walking in the bicycle lane and looked distressed.

The citizen spoke with this man and the man told him that he needed a ride back to Missouri. The citizen could not take the man that far, but he could take him to the police station.

The officers brought this man into the police headquarters and learned that he was a sex registrant who had not registered with local law enforcement for more than two years.

The officers arrested the man for this and during the search of his person they discovered a crack pipe.

This 74-year-old homeless man was charged with failing to register as a sex registrant and possession of drug paraphernalia.

His bail was set at $20,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
