Grand Marshal Named For Santa Monica 4th Of July Parade:

The Grand Marshal for the 6th Annual Santa Monica 4th of July Parade has been announced by the Ocean Park Association who is presenting this year’s parade in special partnership with The Buy Local Santa Monica Committee.

Actually, there are several Grand Marshals: Benjamin Kay, Science teacher at Santa Monica High School; Joe Wise, Science Teacher at New Roads High School; Marianna O’Brien, Science Teacher at Lincoln Middle School; and Kristin Jurewicz, Science teacher at John Adams Middle School. These teachers are representing the Science Teachers of Santa Monica.

“The science teachers deserve to take a bow for the tremendous work they have done for the children of our community,” says Lori Nafshun, one of the 4th of July Parade Founders. “In these days of emphasizing standardized testing, it’s important to have teachers in our schools who have an opportunity to teach critical thinking. We owe the science teachers our gratitude for helping to keep the passion for learning alive.”

This year parade’s theme will emphasize science and technology, so put on your propeller hats and activate your anti-matter pods as we hope to see a spirited display of the imaginative, inventive spirit of our nation’s founders — Benjamin Franklin was an inventor, after all.

The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4 in front of the Santa Monica Civic Center and proceeds down Main Street to the Venice border.

General parade inquiries should be directed to parade@opa-sm.org.
