Man Steals Dairy Crates To Carry Belongings; Arrested By Santa Monica Police: Alert Police Blotter: Crime!

A 40-year-old man who had his backpack stolen was arrested Friday, Jan. 18 after he was caught with dairy crates he allegedly had stolen to carry his belongings in.

At 11:24 a.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were requested to assist a Park Ranger and a Community Service Officer who were conversing with two individuals who were sitting on dairy crates at the corner of Main Street and Colorado Avenue.

This is in violation of California Penal Code 565 (not being at the corner of Main Street and Colorado Avenue, but being illegally in possession of milk crates).

When the officers arrived they asked these two suspects where they had obtained the dairy crates.

One of the suspects told the officers that someone had stolen his backpack and that he had taken the dairy crates from the back of a business so that he would have a receptacle in which to transport his belongings.

This man was immediately arrested and faces the charge of illegal possession of dairy crates. Bail was set for man at $500.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
