Super Bowl-A-Thon XVII Raises $40K For Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition:

For the 17th year in a row, the Santa Monica community came together in full force at the SuperBowl-A-Thon last Friday to raise about $40,000 for the Westside Shelter & Hunger Coalition.

The proceeds will go towards efforts to strengthen services to homeless and at-risk men, women and families through education, advocacy, and service coordination.

It is estimated that about 600 bowlers hit the lanes at AMF Bay Shore Lanes on Pico Boulevard as part of the event between 11am and 9pm – a mix of businesses, social service agencies, and local government.

Event co-chair Lynne Thomas, Director of Sales & Marketing at The Lobster, said it was another huge event that lived up to expectations.

“I’m so honored to be a part of this annual event where the community comes together to join forces and raise money for this amazing cause,” Thomas said. “It makes me proud to be a part of the fabulous city Santa Monica is.”

Donations are expected continue to come in until Feb. 20 with teams who raise the most money eligible for prizes.

Westside Shelter & Hunger Coalition chair Dr. Va Lecia Adams said the fundraiser was a really unique event.

“The coalition itself brings together a number of different aspects of the community… and really the Bowlathon does the same thing,” Dr. Adams said. “This is the only way that we’re able to raise funds to support agencies who address homelessness and issues around hunger. We as a community are having fun together and we are raising awareness.”

In the annual Chiefs Challenge, Fire Chief Scott Ferguson defeated Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks 135 to 110.

But the Police Department had the last laugh by beating the Fire Department as a team.

An awards breakfast is scheduled for March 1 at The Lobster.
