CSI Santa Monica: Cops Identify Alley Assault Suspect Using DNA: Alert Police Blotter: CSI Santa Monica.

This story begins back on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at an undocumented time, when officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the 1500 block of alley number nine in order to investigate a report of a man hitting a woman.

When the officers arrived they found a female victim who told them she had been walking in the alley when a man had run up behind her and pushed her down to the ground.

The man had then punched and kicked her several times with the intention of making her surrender her purse to him.

A number of people had seen this attack and after the man had failed to obtain the purse he ran off.

The attending officers took a report while forensic evidence was collected at the scene.

As a result of the subsequent investigation the police used DNA (DNA stands for Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid and it is the genetic material of a cell that can be used to identify an individual with an almost perfect probability of accuracy) collected at the crime scene to identify a suspect.

On Friday, March 3, 2013 officers went to the Los Angeles Police Department Hollywood Division to take custody of the suspect who had been detained there.

This 30-year-old homeless man was charged with attempted robbery and bail was set at $50,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
