When Mr. Santa Monica writes, I read. So, when Nat Trives took the time to send me a note, I paid attention.
I had long known that New Roads School is one of Santa Monica’s premiere educational facilities. What Nat told me is that New Roads is now part of our city’s cultural assets.
“I am like a proud godfather with a new born,” Trives wrote. “Having been founding Board chair of both New Visions Foundation and New Roads School, I want to commend Paul Cummins and David Bryan for following their dreams along with the members of their Boards for creating a partnership that has given Santa Monica and its neighboring communities, a jewel of a theater and leadership center that adds to the educational and cultural quality of life in our great city. Thanks to the wonderful benefactors who had faith in our dream becoming a reality.”
Fair enough, Nat. But, when I saw that the new facility was hosting a showing of the works of one of my favorite artists from the age of marches and protests, I went weak in the knees.
When I first saw the 1985 “Love Stamp” by artist Corita Kent, I was struck by the bold strokes of rainbow colors that crowned the word LOVE on a 22-cent stamp.
Kent’s serigraphs were a mainstay of the last century’s social justice movement.
It is fitting then that the beautiful Ann and Jerry Moss Theater at New Roads School has pieces from the celebrated artist in the inaugural gallery exhibition.
I will be celebrating Kent and New Roads School at The Santa Monica Chamber’s next “Business @ Sunset Mixer” this Wednesday, March 20 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
Attendees will enjoy custom drinks and delicious food from Border Grill.
