The Santa Monica College Emeritus Art Gallery today opens the exhibition “Acrylic Paintings,” an exhibit of intricate, visually exciting works by artist and Emeritus College instructor Catherine Tirr.
The exhibit will run today through Oct. 4 at the gallery, located on the first floor of Emeritus College, 1227 Second Street, in downtown Santa Monica.
The opening reception is from 5 pm to 6:30 pm today, Sept. 5. Gallery hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.
Tirr is an award-winning artist whose works have been exhibited widely in Europe and the U.S.
She was born in England and studied at Chelsea School of Art in London. Her work in one of her first group exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Art, London, in 1979 was awarded the Stowells Trophy.
After successful shows in England and Iceland, Tirr relocated to the U.S. on scholarship in 1980. A works-on-paper project, in collaboration with Detroit poet Chris Tysch, culminated in “Coat of Arms,” a publication for Station Hill Press.
Tirr has also participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the U.S, including shows at Detroit’s Robert Kidd Gallery and Fischer Gallery, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Armand Hammer Museum, and San Francisco’s Olga Dollar Gallery.
