At this time of year everything goes. Teams and individuals go up for league championships, hoping to get an extension to their season by getting an invite to the postseason.
St. Monica is in that boat with its football team squeezing into the playoffs this week. The Mariners will take a road trip to play Rio Honda Prep in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Northeast Division playoffs. St. Monica made the postseason despite a 3-7 overall record and finishing last in the Santa Fe League.
Still, this is a great opportunity for the Mariners to show that they belong in the postseason. However, the football team isn’t the only fall athletic program at St. Monica with something to prove.
The Mariners are having success across the board with their fall season teams. After finishing third in the Camino Real League, St. Monica’s volleyball team took on Mission Prep in a playoff home game Tuesday night.
On the tennis front, St. Monica’s Sofia Booth (second) and Kaeleigh Cornwall (third) both shined in the Del Rey League singles run. Katie Grimm (second) and Pablo De Mare-Reynoso had spectacular meets at the Del Rey League finals. Acacia Shyr has been a model of consistency for the Mariners this season, finishing third in Del Rey golf play.
