Senior Dennis Ashley continues to light up the scoreboard for the St. Monica boys basketball team this season. Ashley has been on a tear of late, scoring over 20 points in multiple games.
In the two games the Mariners played last week, Ashley tallied 23 points, four assists and three rebounds in a 60-48 defeat to Cathedral.
Ashley fell off his 20-point perch in an 82-62 win against Mary Star of the Sea, scoring 17 points in another solid outing.
In a surprising run, St. Monica actually led Cathedral, one of the best teams in the CIF Southern Section after the first quarter, clinging to a 13-11 lead. The Mariners hung tough in the first half, trailing by just three points going into intermission.
That would be the only period lead the Mariners would have against Cathedral, which claimed 16-11, 16-14 and 17-10 advantages over the last three quarters.
Spencer Gorman backed up Ashley’s scoring output with a double-digit effort of 14 points and eight rebounds for the Mariners. St. Monica rebounded from the Cathedral loss to easily win its contest against Mary Star of the Sea. The Mariners outpaced the Stars 22-9 in the first quarter to take command of the game early.
After being outscored 21-18 in the second quarter, St. Monica owned the last two periods of the game, outscoring the Stars 42-32 rest of the way to claim its 12th win of the season.
Ashley had added support in this game as Gorman (18 points, nine rebounds) and Kavin Dotson (16 points) made noteworthy contributions.
