New Roads girls and boys soccer teams both defeated Wildwood on Feb. 7 in matches held at Marine Park and Mar Vista Park, respectively. The final score for the boys match was 4-3, while the girls match ended 2-0.
For the girls, goals were scored by freshman Gabby Watkin and sophomore Marlena Backlar, assisted by junior Claire Van Every. For the girls’ soccer team, getting the win against Wildwood is a big deal.
The Jaguars (1-10-1) notched their first win of the season against Wildwood. New Roads boys’ basketball team also racked up both league and non-league wins in two home games at played at Memorial Park Gym. In the league match on Feb. 3, the host New Roads Jaguars basketball team scored a decisive 71-43 triumph over the Lennox Academy Panthers.
It was the Jaguars fourth win of the season and second victory in the Coastal League this year. In a non-league outing on Jan. 31, the Jaguars basketball squad edged the visiting Pacific Lutheran Stingrays (Gardena), by a margin of 57-52.
However, those back-to-back wins were offset by consecutive losses. The Jaguars fell to Wildwood, 62-48, on Feb. 4. New Roads (4-16, 2-9) concluded its regular season with an 84-36 defeat to Rolling Hills Prep on Saturday, Feb. 8.
Still, those defeats didn’t take away the two victories New Roads was able to pick up late in the season.
“We are proud to have these wins under our belts, but even more proud of the tenacity and work ethic these teams have demonstrated this season,” said New Roads Athletic Director Matt Steinhaus.
