Up next for the Windward girls basketball team is a run for the state title after demolishing Mater Dei for the CIF-Southern Section Open Division championship game on March 7.
It’s not too surprising that the Alpha League champs rolled the Monarchs in a 61-46 win.
After all Windward has the best point guard in the country in Jordin Canada and a high-quality cast surrounding the UCLA-bound senior.
On its path to winning the CIF title, Windward had to go through some of the best teams in the state, including Long Beach Poly, and Canyon Springs.
Windward will play in the state tournament on March 18 at a site yet to be determined.
The dominant effort against Mater Dei was swift and fast. Windward (25-2) scored 23 points in the first quarter while limiting Mater Dei to just 12 in the period.
Windward effectively put the game away in the second quarter when they scored another 23 points while holding down the Monarchs to just 11 points. Game over.
Windward, which played its championship game at Azusa Pacific University, wasn’t the only Westside school to compete for a CIF title. Brentwood School boys’s basketball team fell to Los Angeles Price 66-61 in the semifinals.
The title game featured Windward boys’ basketball team against Village Christian. Windward had an opportunity to claim two CIF titles in the same year.
However, Windward (22-9) came up just short in its title bid, losing to Village Christian 71-67.
