A 33-year-old homeless man picked the wrong person to get aggressive toward in Palisades Park on Wednesday, July 2 – an off-duty police officer.
Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the 1500 block of Palisades Park at 5:16 pm on this day in order to respond to a report of a man being assaulted by an intoxicated man.
Upon arrival the officers discovered that victim was an off-duty police officer who was visiting Santa Monica from out of state.
The officers interviewed the visiting off-duty police officer and he said that the suspect was very intoxicated and that when he (the off-duty police officer) had attempted to call 911 to report the suspect’s behavior the suspect had tried to punch him.
The off-duty police officer had restrained the suspect until the on-duty SMPD officers arrived.
The on-duty police then arrested this homeless man.
At the time of going to press the charges and any bail amount were not available to this news media outlet.
Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
