This Friday night at the Santa Monica High School halftime of the homecoming game at Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field, the Samohi varsity water polo teams will be participating in one of the longest traditions in Samohi history: running green.
It is an almost 30 year tradition of painting themselves in green paint and running around the field right before they crown the homecoming queen.
Vikings Water Polo Club Head Coach Matthew Amato Flanders said the “Greenie Run” was a celebration of the generations of hard work and success of literally hundreds of Samohi water polo players over the years.
“It is considered a reward and an honor… a rite of passage for our players,” Flanders said.
