Santa Monica’s beachfront hotel Casa del Mar has commissioned celebrated local street artist Jules Muck to create an exclusive, temporary art installation at the center of its grand lobby.
This one-of-a-kind art piece, which Muck will create live on-site beginning Tuesday, Dec. 2, is part of a grand transformation project currently underway at Hotel Casa del Mar.
The iconic property enters the final stage of an exciting Michael S. Smith-led redesign that includes its lobby and bar area, dining destinations, and grand entryway.
The lobby’s central bar, slated for completion in early 2015, marks one of the last remaining areas to undergo an update, and Muck will use the bar’s construction façade as her canvas.
Guests and locals alike can visit the recently debuted Terrazza Lounge to enjoy cocktails, small plates, and live music, while watching her creative process in action.
The artist will be in residence completing her custom installation from 6 pm to 9 pm, Tuesday, Dec. 2 through Saturday, Dec. 6.
The art will remain until early January 2015, when the bar’s construction completes and the hotel makes her work available for purchase, with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation; Muck will also host an on-property lecture for local Santa Monica High School art students with her new work as the focal point.
The unique piece will feature three Masonite slabs spray painted featuring Muck’s signature green paint and depicting a colorful parade of elephants alongside playful hot air balloons, a theme depicted in many of Muck’s works.
General Manager James Barela said the hotel was thrilled to have Muck be a part of this “incredibly exciting update at the hotel.”
“With her ties to our local community and vibrant, creative talent, we couldn’t think of a more fitting artist to ring in the last leg of our redesign,” Barela said. “We are not exactly sure what she has in store for us but it will certainly be something that no one would have imagined at Hotel Casa del Mar.”
