Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were on patrol in the 1300 block of Ocean Ave. when they chanced upon a man who was rummaging through the trunk of a vehicle that was parked at the side of the road on the afternoon of September 9.
The officers recognized this individual from previous encounters and so they pulled over and decided to detain this man in order to ascertain what he was up to.
The officers approached the man and told him to stand still but the man refused and began to run along Ocean Ave.
The officers gave chase and after a short distance they caught the man and detained him.
The officers used their technological systems to discover that the vehicle did not belong to this man and also used their police training to discover that the owner of the vehicle had not given the man permission to take items from the trunk of the vehicle.
The officers arrested this homeless man, aged 50 years, and he was charged with vehicular burglary. Bail was set at $20,000.
