Potential bomb threats have targeted the popular tourist destination before

The Santa Monica Pier reopened Tuesday shortly after a bomb threat shut down the iconic attraction.
On Feb. 6 at around 10:45 a.m., SMPD stated on X that locals were to avoid the Pier area until further notice while officials investigated a bomb threat. A few hours later, SMPD stated on X that after a “comprehensive search,” no threat was discovered and preparations were made to reopen the Pier.
“We’re steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety of our community.” SMPD stated. “Thank you for your understanding during the closure. As always, we encourage vigilance – if you see something, say something.”
Potential bomb threats have targeted the popular tourist destination before. In October, a man described as “distraught” climbed the Ferris wheel in Pacific Park. Officials were informed of the man’s claims to have a bomb in his backpack. The subject, Juan Gonzalez of Garden Grove, was placed in custody and was not found in possession of an explosive device.
