In 1865, African-Americans in Galveston, Texas did not become aware that slavery was over until June 19th, when Union soldiers sailed into port and read a proclamation. Today “Juneteenth” is celebrated as an anniversary of a significant American event. Virginia Avenue Park’s annual gathering features art, music (including great jazz), African-American cuisine, and community memories.
