Coloring the Coastline:

This last Sunday, April 25, thousands of volunteers descended upon the beaches along Los Angeles County’s 31 miles of coastline – including Santa Monica’s beaches – add splashes of color to the 158 lifeguard stations as part of a

Portraits of Hope public arts project.

The Sunday activities marked the beginning of the process of painting the railings of all 158 lifeguard stations on Sunday. The project will continue by installing colorful panels on all lifeguard stations in May. The project is estimated to equal a $158,000 savings to the county to repaint the towers. Organizers hope that savings can go to front line needs in saving lives along L.A. County Beaches.

The 94,800 square feet of “rails” — the long-legged base construction and tower rails of the 158 lifeguard stations — are being painted. It’s the beginning phase of the colorization of the iconic California beach structures.

Benjamin Moore donated more than 300 gallons of paint for the colorful makeovers that will dot the 31 miles of coastline through September. The glowing color choices include a bright lime, cheery blue, sunny yellow, deep orange, sweet pea green and lively purple.

Portraits of Hope, the non-profit organization, has engaged adults and kids with health and learning challenges to create the colorful exterior panels that, by the end of May, and will complete each tower and remain for Californians and visitors to enjoy through September.
