Special City Council Workshop Today in Santa Monica:

The City Council will be hosting a special workshop at the Santa Monica Mail Library today to discuss the City’s biennial budget, expenditure control budgeting, the Mayor-selection process, and an annual review of three council-appointed positions, among other issues.

For the rare weekend council meeting, the workshop’s agenda is limited only to study session issues; accordingly, council members will only be considering recommendations or discussion items.

Following up with a staff direction it made at the Jan. 11 general meeting, the council will be reviewing research performed by City Staff “on different options for selecting a Mayor for the City of Santa Monica, including but not limited to, by election, rotation, seniority, and receiving the most number of votes at the last election.”

Also on tap is a discussion of expenditure control budgeting and the council’s decision to adopt a city staff recommendation to adopt a biennial budget based upon the Finance Department’s five-year economic forecast; both issues were extensively introduced to the Council at its general meeting at City Hall on Feb. 8.

The council will also be considering a “recommendation to adopt the proposed process for conducting annual performance evaluations” for the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk, all of whom “would provide council and staff with regular and structured communication about past and future achievements, goals, and objectives as well as an accountability tool.”

Held at the Mail Library located at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, the Council’s Sunday workshop begins at 1 p.m.
