Noise from aircraft operations at Santa Monica Airport (SMO) has created problems for airport neighbors for many years. In order to help address these problems Santa Monica’s Airport Commission has been holding annual workshops. This year’s workshop will consist of presentations that will focus on data gathered from 2010.
Data from the city staff report prepared for the workshop shows that total airport operations have decreased by 6 percent in 2010 when compared to 2009 and noise violations for the same period decreased by 19 percent.
Stelios Makrides, the city’s airport operations administrator, will make the first presentation that will consist of the Annual Noise Report for 2010, a review the Airport’s noise monitoring system and enforcement protocols, and provide an update on the Fly Neighborly Program and community outreach efforts. Then Vincent Mestre from P.E. Landrum and Brown will present a brief overview of how noise is measured and perceived. This presentation will be followed by a presentation of the 2010 CNEL noise contours for Santa Monica Airport that was prepared by Landrum and Brown. The workshop will conclude with a question and answer period and then the commission will move on to their agenda for their monthly meeting.
