Valencia Hangs On Against Samohi: Lady Vikings Fall in Home Opener

Valencia's Kalia Summerlin has a breakaway against Samohi in the first half of Valencia's 47-40 win on Thursday.

Going 28 percent from the field and 30 percent from the free-throw line, the only way the Samohi girls could stay in their game against Valencia would be if their opponents shot poorly, too.

And that is what happened. Valencia only shot 31 percent from the field, leaving this game winnable for Samohi in the fourth quarter.

After Cristina Rimicci connected on a three-pointer with under a minute to play, the score was 42-38. Samo coach Marty Verdugo tried calling timeout, but the ball was already in play. Verdugo’s girls had to foul, Kalia Summerlin connected on both free throws and Valencia kept their distance for the 47-40 win.

Talia Roth led Valencia with 11 points and eight steals. Ashley Pinsker had nine points, while Jennifer Anumba had 12 rebounds and Summerlin had six assists.

Aniese Palmore led Samohi with 14 points, 10 rebounds and three steals, while Cheyenne De Los Reyes had 10 points and six rebounds and Imani Holloway had three steals.

Samohi will wait to play again Dec. 26 in the West Coast Holiday Festival Tournament.
