St. Monica Grad Guides First Malibu Playoff Win:

Carlos Gray, a graduate of St. Monica High, has coached the Malibu High boys’ basketball team to its first-ever CIF playoff victory.

Malibu defeated Big Pine, 60-30, in a first round game as Chris Peck had 18 rebounds and Dash Kramer contributed 10 assists.

Gray has coached volleyball at Malibu for six years. This is his first year as head basketball coach and his assistant is Ray Humphrey, who was a longtime Santa Monica High assistant in several sports before becoming Malibu’s head football coach two years ago.

“Carlos has done a great job and he was smart enough to bring me in to help,” said Humphrey, who was smiling at the time.

Malibu had never won a league boys basketball championship, but tied St. Bonaventure for the Frontier League title this season.

Ryan Walczuk was named league co-MVP. Peck was first team all league, Kramer was second team all league and Alex Wilson and Nick Sadler earned honorable mentions.

Malibu, which has a 12-10 overall record, will play Thatcher in the next round.
