Son Charged in Fatal Stabbing of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner at Brentwood Home

Prosecutors Say 32-Year-Old Nick Reiner Faces Two Murder Counts and Special Circumstance Allegations

Los Angeles County prosecutors filed murder charges Monday against 32-year-old Nick Reiner after authorities said his parents, actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed at their Brentwood home over the weekend.

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said Reiner was charged with two counts of murder, along with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. Prosecutors also alleged he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife. Hochman stated “No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty.

Investigators allege the attacks occurred in the early morning hours of Dec. 14 at the couple’s residence in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue. Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found with fatal stab wounds, authorities said.

Reiner fled after the killings but was arrested later that evening in Exposition Park, prosecutors said.

An arraignment date has not been set. Nick Reiner’s attorney, Alan Jackson, told ABC Eyewitness News that his client had not been “medically cleared” to appear in court.

If convicted as charged, Reiner could face the death penalty or life in state prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors said a decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made later.

Assistant Head Deputy District Attorney Habib Balian and Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Chung of the Major Crimes Division are prosecuting the case, which remains under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division.

Charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
