Storm Triggers Malibu, Topanga Road Closures as Heavy Rain Approaches

Multiple Canyon Roads Closing Ahead of Heavy Rain and Debris Risk

Los Angeles County Public Works announced that Malibu Canyon Road will be placed under a soft closure beginning at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, restricting access to emergency vehicles only. The closure will span from Francisco Ranch Road and Adamson Flats Road to just south of Piuma Road.

Tuna Canyon Road will be fully closed to all traffic under a hard closure between 2870 Tuna Canyon Road, near the gate, and Pacific Coast Highway.

In addition, Caltrans said it will fully close a 3.6-mile stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, also known as State Route 27, between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive in the unincorporated community of Topanga. That closure is scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m. Tuesday and is intended to remain in place as crews monitor storm conditions and the risk of debris flows.

Caltrans officials said there is no estimated timeline for reopening State Route 27, though the roadway is expected to remain closed at least through Friday. Crews will reassess conditions daily when it is safe to do so.

Pacific Coast Highway, also known as State Route 1, is expected to remain open through the Palisades Fire recovery work zone between Sunset Boulevard and Carbon Beach Terrace. Officials said crews will be prepositioned at locations most vulnerable to debris flows to allow for rapid response if conditions worsen.

County and state officials said all closures will remain in effect until rainfall subsides and crews can safely clear debris and restore roadway conditions. Motorists are urged to plan ahead, use alternate routes, and follow posted signage and instructions from public safety personnel.
