In 1888 Santa Monica civic and business leaders Arcadia Bandini and Senator Jones donated land to the United States government for the “Old Soldiers’ Home.” The Grant Deed came with the directive that it was to be, in perpetuity, a home for Soldiers of American Wars.

Much of the election attention this fall has properly gone to the fierce presidential race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Some voters have also given substantial attention to many of the propositions on next month’s ballot, covering everything from plastic bags to condoms in pornography, from taxes to legalized marijuana.

Living with History in the Fall Salon House:

In addition to being a stellar example of architect John Byers’ work, the Armstrong-Cobb House, site of this year’s Fall Salon, was once home to movie actresses such as Greta Garbo and Bette Davis. In later years it belonged to the Burns family. Bob Burns owned a popular restaurant bearing his name, formerly located at Second and Wilshire. The Burns children grew up in the home, and Beth and Bonnie are now the proprietors of Marmalade on Montana Avenue and donors of the delectable hors d’oeuvres we will enjoy at our salon.
