St. John’s Hospital 2016 Annual Public Meeting, Tuesday, June 28:

Our Santa Monica Mid City Neighborhood is home to the City’s designated Healthcare District. This includes St. John’s Hospital and UCLA Hospital & Medical Center. St. John’s Hospital will be adding 800,000 square feet and 3,000 new parking spots over the next two decades.

July 4 Parade

July 4 Parade, Last Chance to Join:

The 10th Annual Santa Monica 4th of July Parade is almost here, and it’s not too late to get involved.

Founded and produced by the Ocean Park Association (OPA), the parade is a highlight on Santa Monica’s calendar and draws thousands to Main Street as it winds its way south from Pico to Marine and then Barnard Way.

OPCC Honored As Non-Profit of the Year:

OPCC (formerly Ocean Park Community Center ) was honored Wednesday as a Nonprofit of the Year during the California Nonprofits Day ceremony at the State Capitol in Sacramento. OPCC was selected by Assembly member Richard Bloom as an “exceptional nonprofit organization in his community.”

Tongva Park Families Treated to Indigenous Music:

Through October at Santa Monica’s Tongva Park, a number of cultural events for families will be held as part of a “Family Saturdays” series. To kick off these events, award-winning musician and composer Martin Espino held an interactive workshop and demonstration of indigenous American instruments for families visiting Tongva Park throughout the morning this past Saturday to a rapt audience of children and their families.

Mr. Santa Monica’s Healthy Outlook:

Nat Trives, who also goes by “Mr. Santa Monica,” has accomplished a lot in his 81 years – as a community advocate, who serves on many nonprofit boards, as a professor at Santa Monica College, and as a former mayor and police officer of Santa Monica. He also recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary – an impressive personal accomplishment.

OpEd: Anyone from my generation might express a warm feeling for George Harrison’s song “Here Comes the Sun.” First of all, it’s a tune from the “quiet Beatle” that is in many ways perfect in its simplicity: It’s been a long cold lonely winter and now… here comes the sun. The sun in the song is the arrival of better days and even a new clarity about whatever it is that has been troubling you and making you feel blue; perhaps clearing away a fog of depression, making things warm and right again.

About 10 years ago, there was a small wave of hype for an electric scooter called the Segway. However, hype quickly died down when people realized they looked ridiculous on it, to the point of movies like “Paul Blart, Mall Cop” satirized the vehicle altogether. At a glance, it seems like history is to repeat itself, with this new vehicle called the URB-E, standing for “urban electric.” However, that is not so much the case here as it was 10 years ago.
