Pico Farmers’ Market Goes Home on Sat.: return to Virginia Avenue Park after two years at airport

On Saturday, November 12, the Pico Farmers Market will return to its old stand in Virginia Avenue Park, after spending two years at Santa Monica Airport.

The market’s return marks the reopening of the park, at Pico Boulevard and Cloverfield, which was closed two years ago for a general redesign and expansion.

50 farmers are expected to be on hand for the market’s return.

In preparation for the grand opening park festival on December 4, City staff will be on hand Saturday to collect materials for its project, “Portraits of Our Neighborhood.”

The staff hopes to collect photos taken at the park during its 30-year history, as well as stories and anecdotes for its “Portraits.”

Beginning at 10 a.m., on Saturday, staff members will be on hand at the Park Center to scan photos, which will subsequently be showcased on CityTV during the weeks leading up to the December 4 festival. Copies of the photos will also be incorporated into photo murals that are being created by students in the CREST after school program and will be displayed at the festival.

To preserve the multitude of individual experiences and recollections that are integral to the park now, CityTV will also videotape people of all ages telling their stories.

The video sagas will air on City TV between November 15 and December 5.

The Pico Farmers’ Market opened in March of 1992 at the corner of Pico and Cloverfield on the site of an old Smart and Final store. It became a community gathering place as well as a market.

Its 50 farmers sell produce, flowers and plants including herbs and vegetables. As on-site parking is limited at the park, the City urges people to walk, bicycle or park free at Santa Monica College Parking Lot A (corner of 16th Street and Pico) and take the free shuttle to the Park.
