Samohi Women’s Volleyball Squad Is Playoff Bound:

The Samohi Viking women’s volleyball varsity team finished 8-2 in the Ocean League, second place, and earned a first round playoff berth facing Oxnard’s Pacific High School at Samohi yesterday.

This is the third playoffs run in a row for Head Viking Coach Liane Sato, a one time member of the United States Olympic Team.

Last year’s Viking women’s team won the league, although they were eliminated in the first round. Then, last spring, the men’s team, also coached by Sato, advanced four games deep into single elimination playoffs to the final four where, ironically, the men were eliminated by Pacific High School – the same school the women face in the first playoff round this season.

Samohi’s women’s varsity won every Ocean League game this season save both the home and away games against Beverly Hills, who took the league championship. The Viking women are a well balanced team according to Coach Sato. Stand out seniors include Caitlin Williams and Marla Kabashima. Freshman Jeana Schkud won the setter position and had a fantastic season worth all-league consideration. As the women’s season winds down, the men’s season commences in January. With five of six returning starters from last year’s dominating squad expectations for the Viking men are high.
