Tony Todd, a former Santa Monica High athlete and now an actor, has been assisting new Samohi baseball coach Sheldon Philip-Guide during the off-season and will help during the season when available.
“I love Samohi and I’ll do anything to help kids,” he said.
Todd said Alonzo Gonzalez, the Samohi pitcher with vast potential who struggled with his control last season, is doing well now.
“In about 40 innings in off-season competition he’s had very few walks,” said Todd. “I think it’s a matter of confidence.”
Todd said Gonzalez, who seldom batted for Samohi last season, has recently hit several home runs and has been offered a scholarship to Loyola-Marymount.
Todd is one of the leading home run hitters in Santa Monica Little League history. He played football at Samohi and then minor league baseball.
One of his best-known roles as an actor was his portrayal of Jackie Robinson in a Cold Case television show.
