On October 30, 2010, at 8:27 p.m., officers responded to the 1500 block of the beach to assist Harbor Guards with a boat that was coming ashore.
Upon arrival, the officers were advised that Harbor Guards had entered the water and located two male individuals outside of the boat. One of the individuals was unconscious and held afloat by the other individual. Harbor Guards utilizing paddle boards brought both individuals to shore. Harbor Guards proceeded to administer CPR and an AED device to the unconscious individual.
The unconscious male, white, 52 years-old from Anaheim, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The other individual, male, white, 42 years-old from Huntington Beach, was transported to a local hospital, treated for mild hypothermia and was released.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the individuals were near the break water attempting to catch lobsters. As they were drifting, a line from the boat became entangled in the boat propeller. The boat drifted into the break wall and ejected the individuals out of the boat. After climbing onto the break wall, the individuals attempted to swim to the boat as it was drifting toward the Pier. As the individuals swam to the boat, the one individual became unconscious. The other individual yelled for assistance and was contacted by the Harbor Guards.
Santa Monica Police Department is continuing to investigate this incident as an accidental death.
