Art Los Angeles Contemporary at Santa Monica Airport: Barker Hangar at SMO Will Feature a Weekend of LA Art

A new light among the many art events in the Los Angeles area is Art Los Angeles Contemporary, which will be coming to Barker Hangar at the Airport, Jan. 27 through 30.

The art fair was launched a year ago in West Hollywood but its relocation at the hangar gives it more exhibit space. This year’s edition features 70 top international galleries, both established and emerging, with a strong focus on Los Angeles galleries. Each gallery will showcase recent works by its roster of represented artists, giving a cross section view of what’s happening in contemporary art.

Also, the fair will offer artist talks, museum curator-led panel discussions, and a film screening and performance series. Some special events will be staged at locations throughout Santa Monica.

A added attraction will be the on-site “pop-up” café Forage, presented by the Silver Lake restaurant of that name. Forage chef and owner Jason Kim will offer exclusive selections commissioned specifically for the pop up café. Both meat-friendly and meat-free selections will be available for meals, snacks, desserts, and beverages.

“Food and art are the perfect pairing,” said Tim Fleming, director, ALAC. “The main inspiration for installing the Forage pop-up café at ALAC 2011 is to offer fairgoers a taste of what it means to eat and live well in Los Angeles. When it comes to enjoying inspired cuisine like an LA insider, Forage is at the top of the list.”

Opening night at Art LA Contemporary will take place at Barker Hangar on Thursday Jan. 27 from 8 to 10 p.m. and will feature performances by non-profit arts organization West of Rome and artist-musician Brendan Fowler.

Additional performances and events include a “collective show,” 6 p.m., Jan. 28; X-TRA’s 1 Image 1 Minute, a program showing people responding to photographic images, 7 p.m., Jan. 28; an all-day performance/talk called “Design Loves Art;” 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 29; and a panel discussion, “Los Angeles, the Making of a (Female) Art Capital,” Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. Not all these events are at the Barker site; check the program for locations.

Hours for Art Los Angeles Contemporary are Friday, Jan. 28, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 29, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 30, from 11 a..m. to 6 p.m. Tickets will be available online for pre-sale nearer the date of the event and at the door during the event. Tickets are $18 for a one-day pass and $28 for a three-day pass. Opening night admission is $40.

Barker Hangar is located at 3021 Airport Avenue, 323.851.7530, www.artlosangelesfair.com
