On Saturday, August 20, at 6:32 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the 900 block of Broadway in response to a report of an assault. Upon arrival the officers spoke with the victim (and a number of witnesses), and discovered that the victim and the suspect had become embroiled in a fight in the 500 block of Olympic Boulevard, and that during the fight the suspect had pulled out a knife and slashed the victim’s left ear, virtually severing it from his head.
The suspect then ran off. The victim was immediately taken to hospital for emergency treatment. Several hours later, with the help of witnesses, the suspect was discovered in the 600 block of Broadway and arrested. This 66-year-old man, who refused to say where he lived, was charged with mayhem. His bail was set at $100,000.
