Santa Monica police are calling on witnesses to come forward with information regarding a brutal attack on the 2600 block of the beach between the bike path and beach restrooms on Sunday, Sept. 4 at about 8:54 p.m.
Officers responded to this location after a report of an adult man lying unconscious on the ground while someone stole his belongings.
Upon arrival, officers located the victim, who appeared to have been assaulted about the head and face with an unknown hard object.
The victim was bleeding profusely and was unconscious.
With the assistance of one witness, who only observed part of the incident, officers detained two possible suspects involved in the assault and robbery of the victim.
The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, where he remains today.
Investigators have learned that at the time of the assault, there were several individuals in the general area who may have witnessed the crime and would like to speak with them.
