Santa Monica police responded to a burglary in progress opposite Santa Monica High School just before 2 p.m. this afternoon.
Officers responded to an apartment at 1901 Sixth Street at 1:57 p.m. and surrounded the property.
Back-up units were called and the Pico and Sixth Street gate of Samohi was locked down.
When officers entered the property they found the suspect or suspects had already fled.
SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said the residents were not home at the time.
He said he did not if anything had been stolen, but an investigation was under way.
“We’ve asked for forensics to respond, they are there to take pictures and do prints,” Lewis said. “We know it’s a burglary because (officers) can tell by the way they entered.”
He said the property may have been ransacked.
“There was definitely somewhere in there,” he said. “We’ll let the victims come home and identify what’s missing. It could be no loss, the (suspect/s) could have heard the cops come and run, but we don’t know that yet.”
