Santa Monica Pier To Host “Blue Green” Expo Saturday; Free Aquarium Entry For Beach Cleaners:

The Santa Monica Pier will host a free environmental themed expo this Saturday afternoon that will provide sustainable innovation, interactive fun for children, and an eco beer crawl for everyone 21 and over.

Blue Green is a beach sweep and deck party at the pier, which begins with a cleanup of the beach; meet at Heal the Bay’s tent and flags on the northside of the pier between 10 am and 12 pm to join the “Nothin’ But Sand” beach cleanup.

Following the cleanup, learn how to make life more sustainable at the deck party that begins at noon.

An expo of sustainable innovation will include activities for all ages.

Peruse the Green Market to swap and barter gently used items at a free-cycle table; learn environmentally friendly tips from the folks of the Santa Monica Farmers Market and the LA Master Gardeners; and sample organic ice cream served up by Beachy Cream.

Join an eco beer crawl to taste locally brewed and sustainably produced Golden Road Brewing beers.

Golden Road, brewed in Los Angeles, will debut its latest libation, Heal the Bay IPA, at establishments on the pier.

The ale is specially brewed to celebrate Heal the Bay and its mission.

Rusty’s Surf Ranch, Big Dean’s Ocean Front Café, and Santa Monica Pier Seafood will be pouring free samples of Golden Road’s beer for everyone who’s purchased a sustainable mug (made of bamboo) at the Golden Road booth in the Green Market.

The rewards continue for those who take part in cleaning of the beach this weekend: free admission to Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium.

The weekend-long festivities at the aquarium feature special presentations and activities for all ages and an offer of free admission to everyone who first cleans the beach.

For anyone who can’t make it to the “Nothin’ But Sand” cleanup from 10 am to noon Saturday, people can pick up supplies at a beach cleanup station in front of the Pier Aquarium to clean the beach between 11 am and 2 pm on either Saturday or Sunday.

Inside the Pier Aquarium, the marine science center plans include scavenger hunts, a photo booth, face painting, and craft stations set up to create take-home fish pendants and flowerpots.

Curby the recycling robot, a new teaching tool of Santa Monica’s Resource Recovery, and Recycling Division, will be on hand on Saturday to help kids of all ages learn how the city’s recycling program works.

A complete listing of scheduled presentations can be found at http://www.healthebay.org/event /santa-monica-pier-aquarium-earth-weekend-day-1.

This annual celebration always focuses on lessening the impact on the ocean environment. The pier wide party will continue on the deck until 5 pm Saturday; the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium will be open until 6 pm.

The Aquarium is located at 1600 Ocean Front Walk, beach level at the Santa Monica Pier. Admission is free for children under 13 and for all others, there is a $5 suggested donation or a $3 minimum admission fee.
