A 22-year-old man from the San Francisco Bay Area was killed when his speeding 1998 Porsche went off a switchback section of a mountain road above Malibu and fell 100 feet down a steep embankment, the California Highway Patrol said today.
Wing Hay Tang, 22, of Foster City, was driving downhill in a steep, switchbacked section of Piuma Road, about two miles east of Las Virgenes Road, at 11:25 a.m. Sunday, said CHP Sgt. J. Ryland. That road descends from Saddle Peak to Malibu Canyon and is a popular weekend venue for driving enthusiasts in groups of cars or motorcycles.
“While traveling at a high rate of speed, Tang lost control of his vehicle and crossed over into the eastbound lane of traffic. Tang was unable to regain control of his vehicle before it continued out of control off the main traveled portion of the roadway and down a steep embankment,” Ryland said. “The vehicle ultimately came to rest on its roof over 100 feet from Piuma Road.”
Tang was alone inside the Porsche. But he was accompanied on the drive by several acquaintances in other vehicles, the sergeant said.
They stopped at the scene and reported the accident via 911 and Los Angeles County firefighters and CHP officers were on the scene within 10 minutes.
Tang was pulled from his vehicle but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Ryland said.
