A 33-year-old homeless man was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 29, after stealing a bracelet, memory cards, a portable speaker, and some lighters from a Rite Aid Pharmacy in Santa Monica.
At 12:30 pm officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 1331 Wilshire Blvd. in order to investigate a report of theft. Upon arrival the officers were informed that loss prevention agents from the store had detained a suspect.
The officers spoke with the loss prevention agents. They told the officers that they had watched the suspect enter the store and take a bracelet from a display stand and put it into his pocket.
The loss prevention agents added that they then watched as the suspect also took some memory cards, a portable speaker, and some lighters. The loss prevention agents then told the officers that they allowed the suspect to exit the store.
They said that when the suspect had walked past the security sensors an alarm had sounded and it was at that time that they detained the suspect.
After the suspect had returned the stolen merchandise the officers arrested and took this homeless man off to jail where he was charged with theft.
Computer records showed that this man was a habitual theft offender with multiple convictions. Bail was set at $10,000.
