A young man was killed when he crashed his vehicle into a tree while street racing in Santa Monica early this morning. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene by the Santa Monica Police Department who responded to the 2000 block of Wilshire Boulevard shortly after 3 a.m. on Feb. 12.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the driver, a 23-year-old male Santa Monica resident, was racing another vehicle westbound in the 2000 block of Wilshire Boulevard. The driver lost control of his vehicle and struck the other vehicle he was racing. The driver collided with a tree on the north side of the roadway.
Officers located the other vehicle involved in the incident later in the morning. The vehicle was unoccupied. The investigation is still on-going.
