Law enforcement authorities will be out in force beginning tonight, on the lookout for motorists driving while impaired or violating other traffic laws over the New Year’s holiday weekend.
The California Highway Patrol’s “maximum enforcement period” will begin at 6 p.m. and continue until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. During this period, all available officers will be deployed to patrol duties.
“New Year’s Eve is celebrated around the world, signifying the beginning of a new year,” Farrow said. “Start the new year by doing the right thing: Designate a sober driver or have a plan in place for a sober ride before the celebration starts.”
Farrow urged people to call 911 if they suspect a motorist is driving while impaired.
The Los Angeles Police Department will conduct a five-hour sobriety/driver’s license checkpoint, beginning at 9 p.m., at Lincoln Boulevard and Maxella Avenue.
“The LAPD is giving fair warning to all partygoers,” said LAPD Sgt. Sean Karmody. “In addition to DUI/driver’s license checkpoints, you will also see officers conducting an increased number of traffic stops. Officers will show ‘zero tolerance’ for drunk or drugged driving.”
