Relay for Life of Santa Monica took place at Santa Monica College’s Corsair Field from 9am Saturday, July 10, to 9am Sunday, July 11. The American Cancer Society produces the event worldwide to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and to fund research programs and raise public awareness. The Santa Monica event had 336 participants on 44 teams, and raised $55,387.00.
The Luminaria is a ceremony at dusk, where participants walk one lap in darkness, holding glow stick candles with the track illuminated only by Luminaria, a candle set in sand inside a paper bag with dedications on them, celebrating the lives of survivors, and remembering those lost to cancer. A bagpiper led the group.
