WISE & HEALTHY CONNECTIONS: Innovative Solution for Staying at Home:

Santa Monica WISE Connections is part of the “village” concept to help older adults remain in their home, living independently. The concept originated in Boston’s Beacon Hill in 2001 and has since been replicated around the country, with over 150 active and developing “villages.” According to AARP, 90 percent of older adults want to stay in their home, though day-to-day tasks can become more challenging as they age, even for those who enjoy good health.

Launched by WISE & Healthy Aging with local resident leaders, WISE Connections offers support with these tasks as well as myriad of other services ranging from assistance with light chores in the home and transportation, to social events and cultural opportunities. It also offers access to prescreened and discounted vendors, to ensure members can access quality services that are fair and reliable. Members’ interest in WISE Connections varies with their needs.

Jill, a working resident of Burbank, lives far enough away from her mother in Santa Monica to make it difficult for her to provide care on a daily basis. She has found great value in signing up her mother for the program. Now she can enjoy peace of mind while WISE Connections conducts daily check-ins, drives her to her medical appointments and provides a walking buddy to ensure her safety while taking a stroll in the neighborhood.

Don, a busy professional and resident of Santa Monica, joined WISE Connections for the convenience. He needed some work done on his home but was not sure whom to call and did not have the time to fully research contractors. WISE Connections provided him with the referrals he needed from its pool of vetted and discounted vendors. Don accomplished his goal without the hassle and worry of going it alone.

Shirley and Jack, a couple married for 52 years, and Santa Monica residents for just as long, were interested in enhancing their social life. As members of WISE Connections, they enjoy member lunch and dinner gatherings, attending the theater and playing pinochle. WISE Connections has introduced them to new friends and neighbors as well as provided interesting social activities.

WISE Connections is a program of WISE & Healthy Aging, a nonprofit agency serving older adults and their caregivers for over 40 years.
