Has your bike been stolen from your carport in the past nine months in Santa Monica?
The Santa Monica Police Department has recovered dozens of stolen bicycles that will be on display for their owners to claim them.
Viewing dates are this Saturday, June 22 and Saturday, June 29 from 10 am to 2 pm.
As a result of an ongoing investigation, SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said its detectives arrested a suspect May 6 believed to be responsible for the thefts of more than 40 bicycles from various carports in Santa Monica, dating back to October of 2012.
“The bicycles were recovered from the suspect’s residence in Los Angeles during the service of a search warrant,” Lewis said. “Detectives are encouraging victims who have had a bicycle stolen between October 2012 and May 5, 2013, to visit the Santa Monica Police Department on the listed dates and times to see if your bike was recovered.”
Lewis said victims need to bring a copy of their police report; the report number and/or any receipts or photos that will help identify your bike.
“Investigators further believe that many of the recovered bicycles may not have been reported stolen,” he said. “If this is the case, you will be allowed to file a report at the station, before viewing the bicycles. Detectives ask that you bring any identifying information that you may have to prove you are the owner of the bicycle.”
Victims will be permitted to view the recovered stolen bicycles at the Santa Monica Police Department located at 333 Olympic Drive on the dates and times listed above.
