Lady Vikings Win ‘Battle of the Beach’ Tournament: Head to Arizona Next to Face Nationally Ranked Opponent

Santa Monica High School girls basketball defeated Bishop Montgomery over the weekend to capture the “Battle by the Beach” tournament at Redondo Union High School, the Lady Vikings’ second tournament championship early in the 2010-11 campaign.

The Lady Vikings (9-0) on Dec. 10 routed Long Beach Millikan 65-35 to get to the championship game against Bishop Montgomery on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Samohi’s Moriah Faulk was named tournament MVP and Kristina Johnson and Briana Harris made the All-Tournament Team.

Millikan appeared tough and focused early in the game but Samohi opened up a lead in the second quarter behind Kristina Johnson’s drives to the basket. Moriah Faulk found her rhythm in the third, hitting several three pointers and helping the Lady Vikings build up the lead and win.

The Lady Vikings head to Faulk’s home state of Arizona, where they will face, among others, a top-5 nationally ranked opponent from Illinois. That game will be Saturday, Dec. 18 (tip-off time wasn’t immediately available).
